About the artist:
Samuel Bak, painter, born 1933, Vilna.During WWII he was interred with his family in the Vilna Ghetto; he escaped several times with his mother and survived in the Benedictine Monastery with the help of the nuns. He was given art supplies and painted there. He was liberated in 1944 1944 he moved to Lodz, Poland Made aliyah in 1948. In 1955, in Israel, he designed theatre backdrops and costumes 1959-1966 Lived in Italy where he developed his style. From 1993 moved to Boston Massachussetts, USA. 2001 published “Painted in Words: A Memoir” His styleof painting is surrealism, analytical cubism, pop art, and quotations from the old masters. He employs allegory, metaphor substitutions of toys and books for the real people who were murdered by the Nazis.
